Airline Travel Restrictions

Neither the Airlines nor the NSB can close the airport. It’s under federal authority. The NSB Mayor has tasked his external affairs team with working with Alaska Airlines to protect the flow of people and goods into Barrow and to accommodate residents. Beginning April 1st, there will be one direct flight round trip to Barrow from Anchorage only in the evening, Monday thru Friday ONLY. This service will NOT be provided on the weekends.  This information will be provided on the Alaska Airlines website soon and all North Slope Borough travelers will require a waiver from the NSB to travel.

The plane will carry freight and goods in the belly of the aircraft. They will not go anywhere else. Not Deadhorse, Fairbanks, or anywhere else. Just Barrow.

They will run a separate flight from Anchorage to Deadhorse and also a direct flight from Seattle to Deadhorse for slope workers. So they are only limiting the flight to residents or those who have a reason to go to Barrow for work or medical. This way freight will continue to arrive in our communities and they can better control the health, cleaning, and safety aspects of the passengers and crew.

Mitigation Checks

The Nuiqsut Mitigation Committee held a meeting on Saturday, March 28, 2020. A decision was made to distribute the full $50,000 received from ENI to the community to assist residents during this critical time. The City of Nuiqsut has completed household surveys and will begin processing checks to head-of-households beginning Monday, March 30, 2020.  The checks will be delivered to homes starting with elders. The community is asked to follow emergency orders and limit the number of patrons at the AC store to 10 people at a time to ensure the safety of our community.

The City offices are closed to the public during the emergency order. If you have any questions, please direct them to Mayor Mamie Pardue at or Jenny Evans at
